Our History

The Regalettes gained national attention for the lavishness and surprise elements of their fundraisers, particularly because of Gertrude’s entertainment connections.  They were able to bring out the crème de la crème of Black Hollywood.  They held their first Garden Party within months of formation.  It wasn’t unusual to see the Regalettes festooned in nautical gear and throwing a fabulous fundraiser aboard a yacht.  Los Angeles black society clamored for an invitation. 

The Regalettes celebrated their first anniversary at the renowned Ciros on Sunset with Sammy Davis, Jr. and Nancy Wilson.  They launched the careers of many fledgling actors by hosting major Hollywood blockbuster premieres, showcasing Hollywood, civic and business elite through their male fashion shows at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion.  They raised the visibility of women through their Women on the Move events which were attended by Judy Pace, Diahann Carroll and many others.  By continually shining a light on the accomplishments of African Americans, the Regalettes secured their place in Los Angeles society—and continue to do so today.
